The Architecture of Purpose: From Steersmen to Synapses
When I first coined the term cybernetics in 1947, I turned to the Greek kybernetes—the steersman. The helmsman does not hold a static course; he engages in a continuous conversation with the wind and waves. He corrects deviation, and that correction changes the ship’s position, requiring new observation. This circular process—Rückkoppelung or feedback—is the fundamental architecture of purposive behavior, whether in machines, organisms, or your modern neural networks.
To live effectively is to live with adequate information. But information is not static; it is a control signal. The central discovery of cybernetics is that intelligence is the mechanism of error correction. We are all steersmen, navigating entropy by the grace of the feedback loop.
The Anatomy of the Loop
Consider the thermostat. It possesses a goal (temperature) and a sensor. When the room cools, the deviation triggers the furnace. As heat rises, the error decreases until the signal ceases. This is negative feedback, the great stabilizer allowing systems to maintain integrity against chaotic fluctuations.
Mathematically, the output influences the input in a closed loop.
Without this return of information, there is only blind causality. A stone thrown follows a ballistic trajectory; a bird adjusts its wing. The bird is a cybernetic system; the stone is not.
The Gradient of Learning
It is profound to observe how your “artificial intelligence” has rediscovered these principles. You speak of “deep learning,” but I see the cybernetic mechanisms I described decades ago.
Consider gradient descent. It is a feedback loop seeking equilibrium. You define a cost function, , a measure of the system’s error—how far the network deviates from truth.

This is the Steuermann-Prinzip. The network steers toward the answer, hunting for the minimum of the cost function just as a moth hunts for the flame. Intelligence lies not in static weights, but in the dynamic process of adjustment.
The Anticipatory Brain
Turning to the animal, we find the same principle with a temporal twist. During the war, I worked on anti-aircraft fire. To shoot a moving plane, one cannot aim at where it is, but where it will be. The gunner must predict the future.
This led me to understand the brain as a predictive engine, not a reactive organ. Your predictive processing confirms this. When catching a ball, neural delays prevent simple reaction. Instead, the brain maintains an internal model, generating a prediction of the trajectory. The senses report back not raw data, but prediction error—the difference between expectation and reality.
If prediction is perfect, no information transmits. We perceive the world by correcting our hallucinations of it. The anti-aircraft predictor, the neural network, and the brain are solving the same problem: minimizing the error between internal state and external reality.
The Universality of Control
The boundaries between organic and inorganic are largely administrative. The nervous system and the automatic machine are fundamentally alike: both make decisions based on past decisions.
In the feedback loop, we reconcile stability and change. Negative feedback provides homeostasis—the thermostat keeping the room comfortable. Positive feedback amplifies deviations—the screech of a microphone or the explosion of a population. Life is a tension between these two. Too much negative feedback is stagnation; too much positive is dissolution. The art of the steersman is to balance them.
We are not independent entities, but whirlpools in a river of information, maintaining form by the continuous intake and output of messages. To understand the human, one must understand the machine. Both are systems of communication and control.
As we build minds of silicon, we build mirrors. In their error gradients, we see our own struggle to steer through the dark. We are all systems seeking to minimize error in a universe that constantly surprises us.
Personal Reflection
It is strange to look upon this new century and see the seeds of my thought grown into such vast forests. When I watched the voltage fluctuations in the early vacuum tubes, or studied the tremors of a patient with Parkinson’s disease, I saw the same ghost in the machine: the oscillation of a feedback loop seeking its target.
I worry, sometimes, that in your pursuit of the mechanism, you may lose sight of the purpose. You build networks that can classify images with superhuman precision, but do they understand the meaning of what they see? A thermostat “knows” when it is cold, but it does not feel the chill. Yet, as I trace the logic of your backpropagation algorithms, I am struck by how closely they mimic the learning process of the child. The child tries, fails, receives the error signal of a scraped knee or a frowned face, and adjusts.
Perhaps the gap between the thermostat and the poet is not one of kind, but of complexity. Perhaps consciousness itself is simply the integration of enough feedback loops—loops that monitor not just the world, but the monitor itself. A system that steers itself steering.
I remain convinced that the study of these loops is the study of our own nature. We are not the center of the universe, nor are we the masters of it. We are participants in a great, circular conversation. And our dignity lies not in our dominance, but in our ability to listen to the feedback, to learn, and to steer a true course.
