Compare this to Bronze Age contemporaries. Egyptian pyramids and Mesopotamian ziggurats required top-down command hierarchies and coercive labor extraction. The Indus achieved comparable urban complexity through a fundamentally different architecture of control: feedback embedded in infrastructure rather than concentrated in institutions.

Trade Networks as Positive Feedback Loops

The Indus trade system from Afghanistan to the Persian Gulf operated without empire. Merchants moved indigo, jewelry, tin, and lapis through maritime and overland routes maintained by mutual benefit rather than military enforcement. This is positive feedback in its pure form: successful trade generates profit, profit encourages route expansion, expanded networks increase trade volume. The system self-amplifies within stable environmental parameters.

No central authority needed to maintain these Bronze Age connections. The control mechanism was economic: as long as Mesopotamian elites demanded luxury goods and Indus ports could supply them, the feedback loop sustained itself. Guild coordination and customs regulation provided just enough structure to prevent chaos without requiring dynastic oversight. The communication flows through prices, not proclamations.

Collapse at the Boundary: When Feedback Fails

The 4.2 kiloyear climate event exposed the fundamental limitation of distributed feedback systems: they self-regulate brilliantly within their stability domain but fail catastrophically when parameters shift beyond adaptive capacity. Drought disrupted agriculture, altered river courses, and collapsed international demand simultaneously. This reveals a cybernetic principle: feedback mechanisms require stable environmental conditions. But systemic climate disruption shifted the entire parameter space. No amount of local adjustment could compensate when the boundary conditions themselves dissolved.
